Jury Fairness has one goal - to change laws nationwide so that people with felony convictions can serve on juries.
Our first target is the State of New York.
ABOUT JURY FAIRNESS
WHO WE ARE
Jury Fairness began as a collaboration between attorney Matthew Haicken and numerous criminal justice activists including Five Mualimm-ak, and attorney Stephanie Bazell. They have witnessed the devastating effects that unrepresentative juries can have on civil and criminal justice.
WHY DOES IT MATTER WHO SERVES ON JURIES?
Juries have the fate of the community in their hands. The right to a jury trial, in both civil and criminal cases, is enshrined in the constitution. Jury duty is part of the franchise; it is equally as important as the right to vote.
CURRENT NEW YORK LAW
New York currently has a lifetime ban on jury service for anyone with a felony conviction. A bill to lift this ban passed the New York State Senate in 2019, but died in the Assembly. It has languished on legislative life support ever since. The time to pass it is now.
